Comprehension Focus Group Intervention

Online

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Small Group Intervention

Training Description

(Grades 3–8). A three-phase intervention to build deep comprehension through language, reading, and writing about reading. Comprehension Focus Group is a small-group intervention for students in grades 3–8 who can decode simple text but need targeted support to understand, discuss, and write about complex texts. The intervention includes three integrated phases that work together to strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, decoding, metacognition, and written expression. •    Language Phase: Builds essential background knowledge, academic vocabulary, and oral language through units of study using interactive read-aloud, discussion, unpacking complex sentences, and key close-reading strategies. This phase lays the foundation for understanding text by expanding students' content knowledge and expressive language. •    Reading Phase: Focuses on explicit instruction (mini-lessons) in comprehension strategies, text structure, metacognitive thinking, vocabulary, language structure (syntax, semantics, etc.), and decoding multisyllabic words. Then, students read with teacher scaffolding, engage in collaborative discussions of the text, and write in response to reading to extend their understanding. •    Assessment and Writing About Reading Phase: The teacher assesses the students' reading in the areas of decoding, fluency, and comprehension. While the teacher is assessing, the remaining students reread previously read texts for fluency. Then, the students write about one of the selected texts. This comprehensive approach supports students in becoming confident and thoughtful readers and writers who can process and express complex ideas across various content areas. Participants will receive: Overview of an Informal Reading Inventory Table of Contents for Assessment Notebook Oral reading form and teacher observation form Implementation tools Phase-specific lesson planners (language, reading, and writing about reading) Response-to-text writing prompts with scaffolds for citing evidence Multisyllabic word decoding routines Student Materials To pay by check, select Manual at checkout.
