Writing Aloud Intervention

Online

Revised to Align with State Assessment Expectations

Training Description

Thursday, March 5, 2026 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Central Zoom The Writing Aloud Tier 2 and Tier 3 small-group intervention is designed for students who are reading in first through eighth grade, but are experiencing difficulties in the writing process. The goal is to assist students in understanding that writing includes a process of generating ideas, drafting a message, revising, editing, and preparing a piece for a particular audience. The Writing Aloud intervention includes five elements: 1. Explicit teaching 2. Group composition 3. Independent writing 4. Teacher conferences 5. Student reflection and self-assessment The lesson framework occurs in two phases (Language Phase and Writing Phase), with thirty minutes of instruction each day. Each phase includes specialized procedures for building students’ knowledge of reading and writing as language-based processes. It is essential for students to have daily instruction as they strive to build connections between past and future learning. With struggling readers, familiarity and recency are the cornerstones of accelerated learning. During the Language Phase, the students enhance their listening and speaking comprehension through shared and interactive reading experiences. The reading experience provides the raw materials for the writing experience as the teacher provides opportunities for students to examine how authors use particular structures and crafting devices to support the readers’ deeper comprehension. The Writing Phase provides an apprenticeship framework for learning about the writing process. Over several days the teacher and students interact around a jointly constructed piece of writing, followed by opportunities for the students’ to apply their knowledge to an independent piece of writing. Participants will receive: *Overview of Writing Assessment *Table of Contents for Assessment Notebook for Writing Aloud *Implementation tools *Phase-specific lesson planners (language and writing) *Procedure Booklet *Spelling routines
